SUMMER RESIDENTIAL GOVERNOR'S SCHOOLS (SRGS)

The Summer Residential Governor's Schools (SRGS) (Academic, Mentorships, Visual and Performing Arts) are month-long residential programs for tenth and eleventh grade students in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Summer Residential Governor's Schools are housed on various campuses throughout the Commonwealth and are funded by the Commonwealth of Virginia and local school divisions.

The SRGS Academic programs provide intellectually challenging and enriching experiences within a community of mutual support, respect, and dedication for a limited number of academically/intellectually gifted high school students. Each college-based program provides a curriculum that integrates subject matter from various disciplines around its overall program theme. Each mentorship program provides challenging work experiences relevant to the mentorship site.

Academic Programs

Agriculture (100 students) Virginia Tech (agribusiness, biotechnology, environmental science & its implications, international trade, resource management)

Humanities (200 students) Radford University (anthropology, economics, history, literature, media, philosophy, political science, psychology, sociology)

Life Science & Medicine (30 students) Virginia Commonwealth University (biology, chemistry, computer science applications, environmental science,forensics, medicine, physics)

Math, Science & Technology (160 students) Lynchburg College(anatomy & physiology, astronomy, computer programming, geology, hydrology, hypermedia, physics, upper-level mathematics)

NASA/Langley Research Center (based on availability) Christopher Newport University(aeronautical engineering, advanced computer science, electrical engineering, material science, mechanical engineering)

VIMS/Virginia Institute of Marine Science (based on availability) Christopher Newport University (coastal law, fisheries, marine resources management, wetlands ecology)

The application process begins at the school level in October. Announcements will be posted in the building and on School Fusion.  Students who have questions or who are interested in applying for the 2012 Summer Residential Governors Schools may contact Ms. Overton or Mr. Bredbenner.

Visual and Performing Arts (Radford University)

The (SRGS) for Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) provides artistically challenging and intellectually enriching experiences. This learning occurs within a community of mutual support, respect, and dedication. The VPA program focuses on process, not upon finished works of art. The program exposes students to a wide variety of experiences in an art form and offers participants opportunities to explore numerous aspects of variety of art forms. Students spend the month interacting with outstanding arts professionals from throughout the country.

Theater (45-50 students)

Students interested an arts audition must sign up with Ms. Overton (on the doors of rooms 1419 and 1145) in October (deadline 10/27). They must also complete a preliminary application (printed on blue paper) to bring to the audition.

Students in the classes of 2013 and 2014 are eligible to apply for the 2012 programs.
Students interested in the LSM, VIMS, and NASA programs should see Ms. Overton to discuss the selectiveness of these programs.

ANNUAL YEAR GOVERNOR'S SCHOOLS (AYGS)

GS@IP
The Governor's School @ Information Park is a partial day STEM program offered for students' junior and senior years. The program gives students the opportunity to work with professionals in STEM fields, conduct authentic scientific research, and earn college credit. The program is based at the Manassas Campus of George Mason University and is a partial day program. Students attend the GS@IP in the mornings and return to Forest Park for the last block of the day (6th and 7th period), when they generally take English and social studies courses. Students participate in the program their junior and senior years; applications are due in the winter of sophomore year. Students must have completed Algebra II/Trigonometry by the end of their sophomore year in order to enrol in the program.

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology
Most students enrol in TJHS beginning their ninth grade year; however a limited number of students are accepted sophomore and junior years. This application process takes place in June. See the TJHS website for more information.

Class Announcements
State Arts Auditions
Students who are moving forward to the state arts auditions are reminded that they should begin completing the full application and getting teacher recommendations. A letter will arrive in December with state audition times. The state auditions have been moved from GMU to Mary Washington University in Fredericksburg.
Arts Local Audition Results
Students who auditioned at the local auditions are anxiously awaiting the results. Letters should be mailed the week of Thanksgiving break. If you are moving forward to state auditions, you will need to start preparing your official application and preparing for state auditions.

Students interested in attending the information meeting on November 17th to get more information on SRGS should e-mail Ms. Overton to get a receive a pass to attend.

Applications

Students applying for Arts programs should only complete the preliminary application; once students know they are going forward to the state auditions, then they should complete the full application.

Students applying for humanities, math/science/technology, and agriculture programs should complete the academic application.

Students applying for the mentorships programs or the Life Sciences/Medicine program should complete the mentorship application.
Arts Auditions 2011-2012 SY
The Prince William County local auditions will be held at Woodbridge High School on Monday, November 7. Please see the audition requirements in the class files below for information on audition expectations for students. You will need to see or e-mail Ms. Overton BY OCTOBER 27th in order to get an audition time. Students will need to make their own transportation arrangements. If a student is unable to arrange transportation, he/she needs to let Ms. Overton know at least one week in advance. Students auditioning in vocal music are reminded that they are responsible for arranging for their own accompanists.
If you are seeking advice/assistance in your specific area for your audition, your arts teachers will be your best resource. If you are seeking advice/assistance concerning the general nature of the audition, please see Ms. Overton.

The state-level auditions are tentatively scheduled for Saturday, January 21 at George Mason University. Students will be informed after the local auditions if they will move forward to state auditions.

If you are applying for acadmics, please make sure you see Ms. Overton for an Early College Scholars agreement. This can earn you maximum points in the "course challenge" category.

Some academic applicants will need to take a test in order to have two test scores. I will let you know ASAP if this is the case with you. You will be testing at the end of the first or beginning of second week in January.

Please turn applications in to Ms. Overton in room 1145. Please remember that applications must be typed.
Governor's School @ Innovation Park
The STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) Governor's School program at Innovation Park will be open this year. Current tenth graders can apply to attend the partial day program at the George Mason University Manassas campus for their junior and senior years. The application process takes place in the winter. Interested students should see Ms. Overton or Mr. Bredbenner in 1145 for more information.
